At the end of the following century, Mr. Mart\u00edn de Mencos y Garinoain and his wife Do\u00f1a Juana L\u00f3pez de Dicastillo y Balda-Ch\u00e1varri, lords of Ezcaba, would establish the Mencos mayorazgo, promoting the construction of a beautiful house, which their son Le\u00f3n would complete. Designed as an observation post, the upper floor is embellished by half-point arches resting on pillars. <strong>The Palace rises over a low hill facing what were the ancient city walls of Tafalla. <\/strong>Around 1590, part of the Mencos family, then living near the Church of Saint Mary, purchased a plot of land \u201cextramuros\u201d on this hillock. It was here, on the royal road that leads to Olite, that their new residence was built.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>It remained the main dwelling for the core Mencos family until 1770.<\/strong> The house of the Real Defensa, on Zapater\u00eda Street in Pamplona, became the main residence of the Mencos family following the marriage of Joaqu\u00edn Jos\u00e9 Mencos y Areizaga (Conde de Guendulain and Bar\u00f3n de Big\u00fcezal, Gobernador de los Reales Alc\u00e1zares of Tafalla) to Magdalena Eslava y Eslava, (Marquesa de la Real Defensa y Condesa del Fresno de la Fuente). <strong>The Palace in Tafalla became a secondary residence until the mid-twentieth century, <\/strong>when it returned to being the main home of the entailed estate of the Mencos of Tafalla.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;2_5,3_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/palaciodelosmencos.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/palacio-mencos-hospital.jpg&#8221; title_text=&#8221;palacio-mencos-hospital&#8221; show_in_lightbox=&#8221;on&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;3_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; header_3_font=&#8221;Playfair Display|500|||||||&#8221; header_3_font_size=&#8221;31px&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3>Wartime occupation<\/h3>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>The Palace was occupied by different troops on numerous occasions during the various confrontations that took place in the region. An example of such occupations was that of the French Army between 1808 and 1813 during the <strong>Spanish War of Independence<\/strong> (or Peninsular War). The same fate befell it during the <strong>First Carlist War,<\/strong> becoming the headquarters of the army of Maria Christina between 1833 and 1839. In the <strong>Third Carlist War<\/strong> (1873 -1876), it became a Red Cross Hospital (it would appear to be the first frontline hospital of what were then called Aid Societies for the Nursing of the War Wounded). In the twentieth century, it was occupied once again in 1936 during the <strong>Spanish Civil War,<\/strong> becoming a training academy for under-officers and the Headquarters of the Civil Guard. Throughout the centuries, the building suffered considerable damage. Renovation work started in the 1940s, under the impulse of Don Tiburcio Mencos y Bernaldo de Quir\u00f3s, Marqu\u00e9s de la Real Defensa. <strong>The Palace is currently in far better condition than it was before the Civil War.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;
